Daytime Loses A Legend!

Regis Philbin Announces Retirement

After an incredible 28 year tenure on the air, EMMY-award winning talk show mogul, Regis Philbin shocked television viewers a few weeks ago that he’ll be stepping down as co-host of Live with Regis & Kelly at the end of this season.

In a statement, Philbin said, “This will be my last year on the show. It’s been 28 years. There is a time when everything must come to an end for people on camera. Especially for certain old people.” A shocked Ripa was moved to tears and expressed her appreciation, admiration, and thanks for the opportunity she's observed over the years!

The 79-year-old TV veteran became the face of America’s morning wake-up call in 1983 when he co-hosted the show (then called The Morning Show) with Cyndy Garvey. But in 1984 Kathie Lee Gifford (then known as Kathie Lee Johnson), took over co-hosting duties until 2000 when she announced she was leaving to spend more time with her family and that was when Kelly Ripa became Reege’s partner-in-crime.

Philbin wasn’t new to the talk show circuit. He was most famous for his career in the late ‘60s as Joey Bishop’s sidekick on the Joey Bishop Show. His resume is packed with hosting gigs such as Almost Anything Goes, Password Plus, Who Want to Be a Millionaire, America’s Got Talent and Million Dollar Password.

The question America is asking itself, "Who will take Regis' spot come September?! More news to follow...

Gay-Themed Ads Will NOT Air During Super Bowl!

As the saying goes, one step forward; take 3 GIANT steps back!!!

The internet was BUZZING about two gay-themed Doritos ads that were rumored to air during the Super Bowl.

Sadly, a Frito-Lay spokesperson has shut down the rumors, stating, "The ads were simply two out of 5,600 submitted to the “Crash the Super Bowl” contest, and that they were not chosen as the winners.

My Question: Were these ads truly 'NOT' deserving of a win, or were Superbowl officials too scared of what the ad may be suggesting?! It's 2011, get out from under the ignorant rocks you live under and see the realities of the world which you live!

More From the Land of Daytime Drama...

4-Time 'ATWT' EMMY Winning Writer to 'Y&R'

Susan Dansby -- the four-time Daytime Emmy winner and Writers Guild Of America Award recipient who was responsible for penning the final two years of AS THE WORLD TURNS scripts -- has been snapped up by THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. "I'm going to Y&R around February 6 to start writing," she tells Soaps In Depth of what will be a six-week trial. "I'm told Y&R has been doing this a lot lately. They put few writers under contract; [instead] they bring them in and see if they get a feel for it or not."

The opportunity to start putting words into the mouths of beloved Y&R characters like Victor and Nikki has Dansby "incredibly excited and incredibly nervous. History plays such a huge role in Y&R, so I really needed to learn that," she admits. Luckily, Dansby has someone on speed dial who can help! "My mom watched [the show], so she was my first phone call when I got this deal!" she says with a laugh. Although she says that she never requests specific writing assignments, Dansby -- a recent cancer survivor -- is intrigued by the possibility of creating dialogue for Lily that will reflect their shared experience.

Dansby certainly heads to her new job with a strong daytime background: In addition to writing for ATWT, she's also worked as a director on GUIDING LIGHT, GENERATIONS, GENERAL HOSPITAL and PORT CHARLES. However, the online buzz is that viewers are curious to see what unique things she'll bring to Y&R... and more specifically, the African-American characters on the show's canvas. "I think the conversation got started about the disparity between what's on the camera and who's working behind it," she explains. "I think there's a new sensitivity."

The Young & the Restless is incredibly fortunate to have a writer such as Dansby on-board. If executive producer Maria Bell has any brain, she would realize her soap is in desperate need of a creative resurgence! Dansby is a cultured writer who can do just that!

Buffy Returns...New Network, New Show!

Sarah Michelle Gellar is coming back to TV, and is looking better than ever! She is ready to kick some ass! CBS has green-lighted Ringer, an hour-long thriller that will star the ex-Slayer as a troubled young lass on the run from the mob. She assumes the life of her wealthy twin sister, only to find out that said sibling has a bounty on her head as well.

Look for Gellar to pull double-duty on-screen playing opposite herself! Ringer is from Supernatural writers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder; Gellar will serve as a co-executive producer on the project, which is being produced by ABC Television Studios and CBS Television Studios.

This marks Gellar's first TV show since Buffy left the airwaves in 2003. She had been attached to an HBO project that didn't work out and has mostly been focusing on features in recent years.

A Whole New World...

Anne Hathaway is heading to McKinley High!

US magazine confirms that the actress is set to star on Fox's musical hit Glee as Kurt's lesbian aunt! Says executive producer, Brad Falchuck, "It was her idea, and [with] someone like her, it's sort of hard to say no!" Falchuck told US at Sunday's Fox Golden Globes after party. "We don't generally get excited about guest stars just for the sake of guest stars, but when you have someone like Gwyneth [Paltrow] or Anne Hathaway, where you can say 'They are amazing,'...they are big gifts to you."

Soap News...

The latest happenings in the land of the Soap Opera!

The writing is on the wall! It has been there for years. Cheap reality, talk and game shows are what's in. Big budget soaps or other scripted series are out. Industry sources are reporting that one of the 6 remains daytime dramas is having the budget slashed in half!

Despite the networks have thrown their soaps a bone, will the industry suffer yet another cancellation in 2011? Millions of fans are still heartbroken over the loss of 'Guiding Light' (2009) and 'As the World Turns' (2010).

In Soap Casting...

'All My Children'
  • A rep for All My Children just confirmed that Melissa Claire Egan is leaving All My Children! Egan announced via social media (Facebook) that she's decided to exit the scene-stealing role of Annie Lavery Chandler after four years on the soap.

'Days of Our Lives'
  • According to SOD Shelley Henning and Jay Kenneth Johnson have opted to exit the sudser.

'General Hospital'

In a shocker, Rebecca Herbst is OUT! Statement from ABC: "Storyline dictates the exit of Elizabeth Webber this spring. The next few months promise to be 'not-to-miss" story for the character. We at ABC and GH wish Rebecca Herbst nothing but the best in her future endeavors," continues ABC statement.  Again, ABC IS confirming that Rebecca Herbst (Liz) will exit GH this spring in a "storyline-dictated" move.

'One Life to Live'
  • According to Soap Opera Digest, 'One Life To Live' star Brittany Underwood is set to leave the show. Underwood's exit is being called, "storyline dictated" and is slated for spring.
  • SOD is reporting that Austin Peck (ex-Brad, ATWT; ex-Austin, Days) has been cast in a new role.

A vast majority of this years nominees are no stranger to Oscar, though this years nominations show a notable infusion of new blood, including Eisenberg, Lawrence and Steinfeld.

Notably missing from the performance list of nominees:
  • Ryan Gosling for lead actor in "Blue Valentine
  • Andrew Garfield for supporting actor in "The Social Network
  • Mark Wahlberg for lead actor in "The Fighter"
  • Mila Kunis for supporting actress in "Black Swan."
One of the biggest snubs and shock came in the directing category. Christopher Nolan, who is nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award for "Inception," failed to earn an Oscar nomination in that category. He did receive a nod for his screenplay for the surreal thriller.

On the flip side, the film academy shared the wealth this year, doling out nominations in the major categories to movies big and small. Nominated alongside blockbusters such as "Inception" & "Toy Story 3" are independent features such as "Winter's Bone" and "Animal Kingdom"; both receiving critical acclaim but had limited release.

All of our burning questions will be answered when the envelopes are open on the 83rd Academy Awards, airing live on Feb. 27, from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland. Actor nominee, James Franco and Anne Hathaway host the star-studded event!

The Oscar Nominations Will Be...

Before getting to the good stuff, here are some fun facts when handicapping the OSCAR RACE:
  1. The film with the most nominations usually wins the TOP PRIZE! It is guaranteed fact, "The Social Network" WILL NOT lead nominations!
  2. The film editing category at the Oscars is crucial to winning the top prize. "The Social Network" and "The King's Speech" – could both be shut out!

Revisiting the 'Daytime Emmy Awards' - 2010

For the 3rd time since 2007, I had the great fortune to judge for the 'Daytime Emmy Awards'. Below, is my handicap of the 'Lead Actor' category, which was posted on the The Envelope (your awards insider). Enjoy.

'World Turns' Veteran Will Take the Gold!
In a category with 5 exceptional actors, with 5 equally dynamic reels, Michael Park takes you on a beautiful journey, leading him to EMMY!

Michael Parks heartbreaking performance as the guilt-ridden Jack Snyder will make him the 'Outstanding Lead Actor' coming June 27th. It seems as though the third time will be the charm for Oakdale's G-man! One of the most underrated actors of his generation, Michael Park delivered the performance of his career in 2009, when he mistakingly shot and killed his brother, Brad, played by Austin Peck. In his EMMY reel, sent to panelists, the scene opens with Jack itting in the SNyder farm kitchen, with his gun on the table. Moments later, Holden enters expressing his disbelief of Brad's passing! Following, a moving interaction with Katie ensues at the hospital, as Jack reveals to his brother's wife how he died! However, it is when Jack confronts Craig and Rosanna  that your heart completely breaks for him! Baiting Craig to call him a murdere, Jack reaches for his gun, pointing straight at Craig to fire. Michael Park captivates you and takes you on an emotional roller coaster. His pain, anguish, and remorse is all apparent, and you cannot belp but want to cry with him.

James Scott has certainly come a long way and has turned into quite the compelling actor. Watching the tapes, I initially thought, we have ourselves a winner! All the ingredients were there. He was angry and loud and gutsy, and when ripping into Sami, stating, "You killed my baby!" Scott sends shivers down your spine. He grabs your attention and it sticks throughout the entire reel. However, as soon as he said, “you killed her, you bury her”, I began feeling differently. That continued as Scott’s character requested seeing his daughter at the morgue. Initially, my feeling told me, this is where it will turn around, this gets him the gold; however, his breakdown, while sitting by Grace’s body didn’t move me as I thought it should. While Scott delivers a grande performance, I was unable to connect to his performance as I did with Michael Park!

Peter Bergman was equally fantastic in his reel. No matter how big or small the scene, he sells the material and turns it into gold! Watching his tape was simply a joy. Bergman played Jack Abbott expertly exhibiting the perfect amount of anger, pain, disappointment and betrayal! While he hit all the right notes, there was no moment for me that screamed, “EMMY”!

Bergman’s colleague, Doug Davidson was equally great, making this category difficult that much more difficult to judge.  In his tape, Davidson goes head to head with Eric Braeden, delivering an emotional performance, blaming the powerful Victor Newman for bringing his sister, Patty, back to Genoa City, driving her to terrorize family friends. Played with great conviction, Davidson commands the screen, however, with an already short reel; it is a disadvantage for Davidson since his co-star (Bergman) has more dialogue in the last minute or so!

With the longest reel, clocking in at just over 11 minutes, Lindstrom’s reel was different than the others and didn’t have that emotional punch! Lindstrom is a very capable actor and is rather convincing, though when compared to the other men in the category it falls flat and is forgettable.

RANKINGS based on submitted REELS:
1.     Michael Park (Jack Snyder, ATWT)
2.     James Scott (EJ Dimera, DAYS)
3.     Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott, Y&R)
4.    Doug Davidson (Paul Williams, Y&R)
5.     Jon Lindstrom (Craig Montgomery, ATWT)

As predicted, Michael Park took home the gold! Watch as he accepts his award...

The PGA's Prove to be UNPREDICTABLE!

In a shocker, 'The King's Speech' BEATS 'The Social Network'

For months, 'The Social Network' has been "king" of the vast majority of critics and association awards. In this particular instance, the PGA thought otherwise. In what was thought to be a LOCK for the 'best picture' OSCAR, 'The Social Network' lost to 'The King's Speech'.

By inflicting this first, but painful wound in the armor of “The Social Network,” “The King’s Speech,” a moving drama from director Tom Hooper about King George VI’s efforts to conquer his stuttering, is now a serious contender for the Oscar that had seemed all but destined for the edgier David Fincher movie. Let us remember, the PGA and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have agreed on best picture the past three years.

While 'The Social Network' is expected to reap in nominations come Tuesday morning, a win for best picture isn't as certain! Will the 'Director's Guild' and 'SAG' agree with the 'PGA' or go the route of the 'Golden Globes'...stay tuned!

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Ricky Gervais returns as host and delivers the goods!
'The Social Network' & 'GLEE' SWEEP!

If star-studded Hollywood is aware of Gervais' antics, why were so many put off by his demeanor?! It should be expected, by now, for stars to feel the heat! As Kathy Griffin puts it, as a comedian, you need to push the envelope.

Once again, coming to the podium, wielding a full glass of beer as a prop, Gervais started off with a shot at Hollywood piƱata Charlie Sheen — "It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it — 'breakfast'" — and then quickly moved on to less obvious and more dangerous targets.

"It seemed like everything was three dimensional this year, except the characters in 'The Tourist,'" he quipped, taking a shot at A-list darlings Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, whose nominations he joked were the product of bribery. While Depp smiled grimly, Gervais moved on to laud the un-nominated "I Love You Phillip Morris" as being movie in which two heterosexual men play two gay men "so the opposite of some famous Scientologists." Then, he went on to mime the sexual congress of Hugh Hefner and his new fiancee and to deliver a rather stale Mel Gibson joke.

Robert Downey Jr. may have put it best. After Gervais introduced him with references to Betty Ford and correctional facilities, the "Iron Man" actor smiled at the audience and said: "Aside from the fact that it's been unusually mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good."
